Considerations When Rafting
Antalya Rafting Rules and Information on River and Rafting Tours
- When embarking on your first river rafting adventure, it is natural to have concerns. Therefore, it is crucial to focus on key aspects that will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. In Köprülü Canyon, where qualified guides prioritize safety, you will find rafting equipment that meets international standards. How can you select the ideal rafting experience? Prior to arranging your trip, consider posing the following inquiries to the rafting tour provider:
- What is the company's level of experience in rafting operations?
- Can you connect with past customers who have rafted with this company?
- Gather information on the guides' qualifications and backgrounds. Directly engaging with the guides can help you ascertain their education, expertise, communication skills, and commitment to safety.
- Life Jackets: Data indicates that 80% of river rafting accidents result from either not wearing a life jacket (improperly fastened zippers and buckles) or using an unsuitable life jacket. Life jackets should have a minimum lifting capacity of 6 kg (ideally 9-10 kg), provide comfortable sitting through straps, meet US Coast Guard Type-III or V standards, and be worn correctly. Inflatable life jackets and 'keyhole' type vests are not suitable for whitewater rafting. Guides must ensure that life jackets are worn appropriately.
- Helmets are mandatory for all trips, and it is advisable to wear them throughout the entire excursion. The helmet should fit securely with enough space for a finger to fit between the helmet and the head. Verify if the guides hold basic first aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certifications. Inquire about the company's provision of emergency repair kits, first aid supplies, and rescue bags on all boats. Each raft should be fully equipped with repair tools and waterproof kits. Additionally, each raft should carry at least one spare paddle/paddle lock, a towing line encircling the rafts, and preferably a safety line extending to the stern. All rafts should be equipped with a throw bag and at least one rescue bucket for non-self-bailing rafts (preferably two). Prior to the rafting expedition, receive a safety briefing. The guide or trip leader must deliver a comprehensive safety briefing covering all essential details. Non-swimmers should refrain from body surfing, and trips should conclude at least one hour before nightfall.
